Sharing a clear plan for Our Bright Green Future
We are excited to share the draft Our Bright Green Future Strategy and Action Plan for feedback before Councillors consider the final version for adoption in early 2026.
Here at the Greater Dandenong City Council, we have been busy reducing our emissions, revegetating and protecting our reserves, cleaning our waterways, and embedding sustainability into our daily operations.
We are proud to share we have reduced our emissions by 80 percent since 2019. This huge achievement has, in part, been made possible by:
- Upgrading and replacing inefficient appliances
- Transitioning our passenger fleet vehicles to electric and low emission alternatives; and,
- Partnering on the VECO Power Purchase Agreement, which ensures all electricity used in our libraries, office buildings, pavilions and streetlights comes from renewable sources.
This is just a small part of our sustainability journey.
What is the Our Bright Green Future Strategy and Action Plan?
Our Bright Green Future builds on the progress already made and our community’s expectations.
It brings together and consolidates our sustainability-related plans and strategies into one clear document, making our actions for the next 10 years clear, measurable and relevant.
The Our Bright Green Future Strategy and Action Plan will guide our work to make Greater Dandenong more sustainable for future generations.
Background
This is part of a larger piece of work we are doing across Council to ensure our future plans have meaningful outcomes and are achievable within a responsible time and budget.
It is called the Integrated Planning Framework and its purpose is tying everything we do back to the 2025-29 Council Plan in a clear, measurable and relevant way.
This is important because our Council Plan outlines all the things our community told us to focus on. For sustainability, this includes:
- Finding opportunities to reduce litter, dumped rubbish and waste to landfill, as well as improving wildlife corridor links.
- Advocating for improved air quality, public transport, cycling, walking and uptake of electric vehicles.
- Increasing tree canopy to 15 per cent in the next three years. We’re already well on our way.
You will see all of these priorities and more in the Draft Our Bright Green Future Strategy and Action Plan 2025-35 on the right of your screen. Copies are also available from our Customer Service Centres in Dandenong, Springvale and Parkmore as well as from libraries in Springvale, Keysborough and Dandenong.
