Thank you to everyone who shared feedback during the Stage 1 community consultation on the future expansion of Red Gum Rest Playground in Dandenong.

Your input has helped shape the design to better meet the needs of local families, young people, and visitors of all ages.

The feedback we received has informed refinements to the playground layout, play opportunities, and accessibility:

  • combining nature‑based play with traditional equipment, including swings, a trampoline, and a central feature play tower with climbing, bridging, and sliding elements
  • improving sensory play opportunities, accessibility, and comfort, and incorporates more natural materials that reflect the park’s character
  • integrating the expanded playground with the existing play space through complementary materials, colours, and planting
  • the play area will be fully-fenced and gated, with improved connections to support safe and inclusive access.

We are excited to share that the project has received Federal Government funding towards the construction of the expanded playground area, which is planned for completion in the 2026-27 financial year.

Stage 2 community consultation is now open and we invite you to review the concept plan and share your feedback as we move closer to the construction of this exciting project!

Dandenong Park is located on Princes Highway, Dandenong.

With an area of more than 17 hectares, Dandenong Creek and the regional bike trail runs through this district park. Dandenong Park includes Shepley Oval, the historic home for Dandenong Park's sports facilities, with the football and cricket clubs being established in 1874.

The Riverside Precinct includes a playground, a large picnic area with BBQ’s, seating, picnic tables and shelters. It features heritage interpretive signage of the former RSL Drill Hall and River Red Gums.

This project is part of the Dandenong Park Regional Leisure Precinct Master Plan 2007.

The design for the Riverside Precinct of Dandenong Park was completed in 2011-2012. The playground design is themed around the colour ‘red’ which references the industrial and manufacturing heritage of Dandenong.

Separate stages of this park area have already been implemented, including the existing playground, picnic area, interpretative artwork and major path works.

This project is to develop a design that expands the playground area in response to the demand and use of this park area. The design will include a diverse range of play equipment to cater to a range of ages and abilities.
